OVERVIEW
You shouldn’t have to choose between a surf trip and giving back. That’s why we offer flexible volunteer opportunities in El Tránsito, allowing you to volunteer in Nicaragua while still having time to surf, explore, or simply relax.
Volunteer for an hour, a day, or throughout your stay — it’s completely up to you. We partner with trusted organizations, including NICA Fund and Waves for Development, to support meaningful, community-led programs. Both are registered 501(c)(3) organizations, which allows us to provide documentation for school credit or tax-related purposes when applicable.
There are many ways to get involved, and we tailor volunteer opportunities based on how you’d like to support the local community. The video below shares more about our local partner, Nicaragua Initiative for Community Advancement (NICA Fund).
Please Note: Volunteering opportunities are available to paying guests only. We do not offer room and board in exchange for volunteer work.
TEACHING
ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANT: Thursday / 1:30 pm (1 hr) Help facilitate instruction by organizing students, assisting in instruction and helping students complete classwork. PRE-K TEACHERS ASSISTANT: Weekdays / 9:00 am (2 hrs) Great with kids? Help the Pre-K teacher with instruction and classroom management. The kids love to see new faces! CREA PROGRAM: Weekdays / 9:00 am (1 hr) The CREA Program (Crea means grow) uses Reflex Math and Khan Academy’s online program via iPads and computers to increase children’s reading and math abilities.
HEALTH & PHYS ED
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: (Time TBD / upon availability) Teach surfing and yoga to kids (or adults) to encourage trying something new and building confidence outside of the classroom. LEARNING GARDEN: Weekdays / 2:00 pm (1 hr) Have a green thumb? Help teach local kids how to grow vegetables and tend to the garden (water, plant and clean) MEDICAL CLINIC: Monday – Thursday / 9:00 am (2 hrs) Are you a nurse, doctor or dentist? Then help us educate the town and aid in the development of the medical services available
HELPING HANDS
SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM: Weekdays / 9:30 am or 11:30 am (1.5 hrs) NICA Fund encourages parents to send their children to school by serving meals for both primary and secondary school. Help to organize students, prepare plates and serve food. TOWN CLEANUP: Weekdays / 9 am (2 hrs) Help keep our town clean through beach, water well, estuary and road cleanups, or educating on why recycling is important. LOCAL SCHOOL: Help improve the structure of the school and provide materials to keep kids interested in their education and increase attendance. (based on school needs). Typically combined with monetary donation for building materials.
